THE DOCTOR'S CORNER: Canine Influenza A fairly new disease, which although very similar to kennel cough, can actually have greater consequences in regards to treatment and outcome. This disease appeared a few years ago and to date no effective vaccine exists which can slow down its progression. As previously mentioned, dogs present with signs similar to kennel cough such as sneezing and coughing. A small percentage of these dogs can go on to develop labored breathing, high fever, and subsequent pneumonia which can prove fatal. These pets will usually require hospitalization, I.V. fluids, antibiotics and other supportive measures which will hopefully result in a positive outcome. The dangerous issue here is the pneumonia which can develop quickly and cause pets to succumb to the disease in spite of aggressive treatment. In a recent advisory sent to veterinarians, it was stressed not to use flu vaccines meant for other species because of the potential for adverse reactions. In addition to I.V. fluids and antibiotics a host of natural medicines such as homeopathic preparations, antioxidants and nutraceuticals exist which may further boost a pet's immunity. These may help to stimulate the major defense and lymphatic systems and improve cellular immune response and antibody production. These medicines in general have no adverse side effects and can be used in conjunction with conventional medicines. After all the issue here is to strengthen and fortify the immune system so as to be in a better position to fend off pathogens which cause disease.
